Adelaide Hills
Drive from Adelaide: 30 minutes
Known for: sauvignon blanc and chardonnay
Australia's coolest wine region features at least
50 cellar doors and 90 wine labels to choose from.
The picturesque area has a reputation for excellent
sauvignon blancs, crisp sparkling wines, complex
chardonnays, elegant shiraz and vibrant new varietals
such as nebbiolo and grüner veltliner.
Spend some time in the historical village of
Hahndorf, which was settled by German immigrants
in 1839, and sample bratwurst sausage with potato
salad and German beers.
If you're an art-lover, visit The Cedars, the
former home and studio of German-born Australian
artist Hans Heysen, which is located on the
town's outskirts.
For new-wave wines, including grüner veltliner
and blaufränkisch, stop at Hahndorf Hill Winery,
which also offers indulgent choco-vino tastings.
It's a must for chocoholics, as fine wines are matched
with the world's most exclusive chocolate.
Winery picks: The Lane Vineyard in Hahndorf
is among the 35 estates on Australian wine journalist
Tyson Stelzer's list of the finest Down Under.
Petaluma's Bridgewater Mill restaurant, which is
housed in an 1860s flour mill, serves Petaluma,
Bridgewater Mill and Croser wines.
Bed down: Historical Mount Lofty House has
been restored to its former glory. It has magnificent
gardens and great views over Piccadilly Valley.
