Custom magazin of the ye e ar From the editor... Recently, I attended the very first Travmedia International Marketplace in Brisbane and caught up with many members of the Australian Society of Travel Writers (ASTW). During a day where we 'speed dated' with tourism bodies and representatives from an array of hotels and travel destinations, there was a lunch with a special guest speaker: the editor in chief of National Geographic, Keith Bellows. Not surprisingly, Bellows is a passionate advocate of travel and its capacity to change people's lives. Right now, he's working on a book to be titled 100 Places That Will Change Your Child's Life, and I am looking forward to reading it. Bellows' talk resonated with everyone in the room – he spoke about the fact that today, more than ever, it is important to have great storytellers, as people will always love to hear or read a wonderful story. I hope you'll agree that this is what we bring to you with every issue of OUTthere: tales about fascinating Australians doing great things, and colourful stories enticing you to travel to the many far-flung reaches of this beautiful country. Bellows also talked about the children of today and how a passport is the new degree. He spoke about how travelling teaches a child so much about other people, places and cultures, thus fostering greater understanding of the world in general. Which, of course, creates more empathy for others, and in turn, we hope, will lead to the best thing that could happen on Earth – peace. So next time you're on a work trip or taking time out to travel some of Australia, consider taking your children along for an educational trip, to meet people living lives that are different to your own.
