People and Culture At the heart of the region is a warm, dynamic community. Known for their friendliness and relaxed approach to life, they are a mixed bunch; from vineyard workers and wine makers, surfers, alternative lifestylers and artists to busy professionals – it's the diversity that makes the community so vibrant. ABORiginAL hERiTAgE The traditional custodians of the land are the Wardandi people, who have inhabited the area for tens of thousands of years. The Wardandi people have a deep affinity with the sea and land. The Wardan Aboriginal Centre is a great place to learn about the Wardandi people's well-defined culture, richly endowed with music, art and legend. On-site is an art gallery, interpretative centre, guided bushwalks and the occasional corroboree and traditional feast are held here too. The Wardandi observe six distinct seasons defined by seasonal food and weather patterns. EuROPEAn SETTLEMEnT The first European settlers arrived in 1830 landing in what is now known as the town of Augusta. Augusta became the third European settlement in WA following King George Sound (Albany) and the Swan River Colony (Perth). These first settlers encountered a harsh, inhospitable environment and severe isolation that required great strength of character to overcome. February and March Time of Marri flowers. Time to go ngari (salmon) fishing on the coast. Time the by-yu (zamia palm seeds) ripen. Time of great gatherings for dance, trade and love. April and May First rains. Time to move back inland. Time to burn. Time to dig yangit roots. Time to hunt yonga (kangaroos). dJERAn BiRAK december and January dry and hot. Moodjar (Christmas Trees) are in bloom.
